Pozo Saloon Weekend Concert

Pozo Saloon Weekend Concert

Once upon a time, just before the Civil War, Pozo, California was a busy beehive of a western town, a stop for the Butterfield Overland mail Stagecoach in a valley below Pozo Summit between the San Joaquin Valley and the Central Coast. Named by a local citizen for the hole-like depression ( “pozo” in Spanish) in which it was situated, there was once a post office, hotel, saloon, two blacksmith shops, general store, and enough homes and ranches to warrant its own school district.

What is left standing today is only the saloon and part of the Pozo Hotel. But what is new is that the area has become an increasingly popular, funky Central Coast concert venue, hosting the likes of the venerated and legendary country singer/songwriter Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Montgomery Gentry, rocker Ted Nugent, the Black Crowes, Snopp Dogg, Ice Cube and blues and even reggae performers like Ziggy Marley, son of the late great Bob Marley. The Santa Barbara Independent Newspaper called Pozo, “perhaps the greatest unknown venue on the West Coast.”

Celebrities have been known to wander into the Pozo Saloon. Clarence Clemons, E Street Band saxophonist, mentioned in his book that he met Bruce Springsteen in Pozo in 2009 to share a chicken-fried steak and listen to tunes on the jukebox.

Tickets for the events are reasonably priced and seating is either assigned or open seating on the grass area. For general admission, bring a lawn chair but no outside drinks, food or pets are allowed. This is almost always a high fire danger area so do not park your vehicle in the high grass on the sides of the road. Exercise extra caution with cigarettes, too. Check the venue website for current and upcoming concert information.

Take U.S. 101 to the Santa Margarita exit toward Santa Margarita Lake. Pozo Saloon is located 10 miles past the lake entrance on Pozo Road. Do not get directions off the internet. Make sure to follow the directions posted directly on the Pozo Saloon site or you will drive far out of your way to find it. www.pozosaloon.com
