Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

The reason the old city of San Luis Obispo stays so youthful and vibrant is the presence of over 19,000 college students in town. California State Polytechnic University, whose philosophy is “learn by doing,” is a highly rated four year public university located off of Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway. It’s sister campus is Cal Poly Pomona, in Southern California. The University is consistently at the top of United States academic rankings, particularly in agriculture, engineering and architecture. U. S. News and World Report named it the #1 Public Master’s University in the Western United States, a distinction it has earned for seventeen straight years. Cal Poly is not just a first-rate university, it’s also the biggest employer in San Luis Obispo. Its importance to the economy of the city cannot be overstated. The Christopher Cohan Center, the city’s premiere performing arts venue, is located on the campus.

To visit the campus, first go to the Admissions Office to get a GPS unit which is packed with information, student videos and audio. The main campus sits up on a hill and there will be a lot of walking involved. Sturdy shoes are definitely necessary. The Student Union is on the north end and you can stop for a bite to eat there or the café on the second floor of the Kennedy Library. To plan ahead, print out a map from their web site or take the online virtual tour. There is an app for your iPhone or iPod. Or sign up for a guided tour by a friendly Cal Poly student.
